COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

How can Therapy help me?

Therapy can help develop insight into patterns in your life that have led to conflict, identify new and healthy behaviors, and change the way you think and feel. Working with a therapist provides a safe space to discuss your concerns.

"But it’s just talking, can’t I talk to my friends?"

Social support is absolutely necessary and powerful. However, did you know that talking through concerns brings about changes in your brain – neurobiological changes that are scientifically measurable? By working with a skilled clinician who can help identify areas that may need a new narrative, and by participating in a therapeutic relationship, you can actually create new neural pathways and feel healthier in mind and body!

WHAT ARE THERAPY SESSIONS LIKE?

Therapy offers a unique opportunity to explore what is important to you and how these issues may have developed with another individual trained in reflective listening, helping you learn and develop new skills. Therapy can look different for everyone based on individual concerns and the therapist's style, but generally, you can expect to discuss recent experiences and any relevant history. You can also expect to receive feedback on any insights or reframing your therapist thinks may be beneficial. Don’t be surprised if you even share a good laugh during sessions – some of us are quite funny!

WHAT ABOUT MEDICATION?

While not everyone who comes to therapy will need medication, it may be suggested depending on the length and severity of symptoms and response to therapy. East Coast Therapy Network is unique in that we have a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner on our team who can help evaluate and make recommendations for medications. By working closely with your therapist, the best treatment plan for the most effective relief can be discussed together.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE, AND HOW DOES
THAT WORK?

While we do not accept insurance (out of network), we can assist you in utilizing any out-of-network benefits you may have. This means the client pays upfront for services, and a receipt is provided to submit to your insurance company. Typically, once a deductible is met, your insurance will begin to cover a portion or all of the cost.

We can guide you through the process of using these benefits. Additionally, you can call the Member Services number on your insurance card to ask any questions you may have. Here are some questions to consider regarding your mental health benefits:

  • Do I have out-of-network mental health benefits?
  • If so, do I have a deductible, and if so, how much is left to pay?
  • Once the deductible is met, what percentage will my insurance cover?

DOES EVERYTHING WE TALK ABOUT REMAIN CONFIDENTIAL?

Confidentiality is one of the most important components between a client and psychotherapist. State law and professional ethics require therapists to maintain confidentiality except in the following situations:

  • If the therapist has reason to suspect past or present abuse or neglect of children, vulnerable adults, or elders based on information provided by the client or collateral sources.
  • If the therapist has reason to suspect the client is seriously in danger of harming him/herself or has threatened to harm another person.

Apart from these rare exceptions, your therapist cannot disclose information to anyone else without obtaining your written permission for any reason.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING WITH ME?

You will be asked to complete some paperwork before your initial visit. After that, you can bring yourself and a sense of humor! While it's helpful to consider what you may want to discuss during the session, we typically navigate it together!
